What is the DD Waiver?
The traditional Developmental Disabilities (DD) Waiver program is run by the Department of Health in the State of New Mexico. It was designed to assist eligible children and adults identified with intellectual and developmental disabilities participate as active members in their communities and serves as an alternative to institutional care. What is a developmental disability?
Developmental disabilities encompass a diverse set of conditions characterized by limitations in physical, cognitive, communicative, or behavioral capabilities. These conditions can affect day-to-day functioning and often persist throughout the individual's lifespan. Conditions falling under this category include, but are not limited to, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and intellectual disabilities. The impact and requirements for assistance can vary greatly from one individual to another, ranging from minor support to comprehensive aid in daily activities and learning processes.

How can speech therapy help?
Speech-language pathologists are experts in communication and an integral part of a multidisciplinary team supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. Communication can look and sound very different for adults with developmental disabilities. Individual may have difficulty producing clear speech, communicating their wants and needs, or have difficulty understanding what they hear or read. Some may struggle with social communication. Others may need to use an augmentative or alternative communication device to communicate with others. This could be a low-tech picture board or a high-tech device on a tablet or phone. A speech therapist will assess individual communication needs and create an individualized plan intended to improve a person's functional communication abilities. This includes family/caregiver education to promote positive communication exchanges and ensure that communication strategies are implemented across settings.

Speech therapy can also assist with cognitive deficits in the areas of memory, executive functioning, reasoning, decision making, and planning through targeted and individualized intervention. Compensatory strategies can be taught to assist individuals achieve their fullest potential and maximum independence.

Some individuals with developmental disabilities have difficulty eating and swallowing, a disorder called dysphagia, or an individual may engage in risky eating behaviors, such as eating too fast. This can put them at risk for aspiration pneumonia and malnutrition. A speech-language pathologist is a critical part of a care team in assessing the risk and severity, diet modification, and providing strategies that reduce aspiration risk.
